For Harrison Polak, high school basketball wasn’t just a sport; it was a journey filled with memorable experiences, tough challenges, and valuable lessons that will stay with him long after his final game.
Unlike many athletes, Polak’s love for the game didn’t start at a very young age. Instead, he only started playing basketball in eighth grade. At first, it was simply an after-school activity. “A lot of my friends signed up,” Polak said, explaining his initial intention in joining the middle school program.
However, what started as a fun hobby quickly turned into something much more meaningful. Exposure to the competition and camaraderie in basketball sparked something in him. “I just fell in love with the game,” Polak said.
Polak faced some major obstacles throughout his career. He dealt with multiple knee injuries, which forced him to spend a lot of time in physical therapy and rehab. “It’s been a big struggle,” he said, “but I’ve been able to overcome it.” Fighting through those injuries is something he takes a lot of pride in.
One of his favorite memories from his high school basketball career came during a playoff game last year against Luperon. The gym was packed, and the energy from the crowd made the game even more exciting. “There was a lot of people in the crowd and a lot of people supporting me,” Polak said. He also felt that he played one of his best games that night. “It was a lot of fun to be able to play in a close game like that … and to come out with a win like that in a playoff game — it’s a special time.”
Basketball also helped shape his mindset. Through everything he went through, Polak learned how to handle challenges and keep pushing forward. “It’s definitely taught me a lot of lessons, like facing adversity and overcoming it,” he explained. He believes those lessons will stay with him long after high school.
Looking ahead, Polak doesn’t plan to play basketball at a competitive level in college, but he may still stay involved. “I might play a little bit of club basketball,” he said, “but I’m mainly looking to get an education and build a career from there.”
Polak’s story shows that high school sports aren’t just about competing and winning games; they’re about meaningful memories, personal growth, and the lessons you will keep with you for the rest of your life.
