Did you just finish a show you love and feel empty inside? Here are some shows to watch next.
How I met your mother (2005)
How I met your mother is nine seasons of a father, Ted Mosby, telling the story to his kids of how he met their mother. But of course, like most stories told by parents, it was never ending. Ted told them all the events and adventures he and his four best friends had that led up to the moment where he finally met the love of his life.
All of the characters are absolutely spectacular. Ted is kind, passionate, and sometimes a bit of a dork when it comes to architecture, but he’s great anyway. Marshall, Ted’s best friend, is sweet, moral (especially about saving the environment), and puts family before everything. Lily, Marshall’s girlfriend, is a kindergarten teacher, but she gives such great advice you’d think she’d be a therapist. She keeps everyone grounded, even though she gets a little crazy when it comes to her own problems. Barney is definitely charming, but don’t let that fool you. Everything is more amusing when he’s around and behind his facade he has a big heart. Finally, Robin. Robin isn’t really a “girl’s girl.” She is a bit of a commitment-phobe, but she cares about her friends too much to let that get in the way.
This show is funny, sweet, and an emotional rollercoaster. You will find yourself rooting for the characters and desperately wanting to know more about the mother. It’s a long story, but totally worth it. You can watch it on Hulu and Netflix.
New Girl (2011)
New Girl starts off when a woman named Jessica Day breaks up with her boyfriend and needs to find a new place to live. So she moves into an apartment loft with three men: Nick, Winston and Shmidt.
Nick, the bartender, is a semi-underachiever. He comes off with grumpy old man vibes but he’s not as lazy as you’d think. Winston is a former basketball player who’s pretty funny. He’s a nice guy who keeps the peace in the household. Shmidt is very much the opposite of Nick. He is very confident in everything he does. He likes things a certain way and can be a bit uptight sometimes. Jess is a whimsical middle school teacher who fights to fit in with the guys. She is quirky in her own special way but they soon accept and adopt her in their lives.
All characters are very distinct and have their own problems to deal with. However they are always very supportive of one another and come through for each other at the end of the day. In a weird way, they become a family to one another. It’s a very endearing show that you can find on Peacock or Hulu.
Heartstopper (2022)
Are you looking for a show that will make you giggle and kick your feet? Then look no further, because this is it. Heartstopper is based on the graphic novel series written by Alice Oseman. It follows two boys, Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring. Charlie is kind, quiet, plays the drums and is terribly insecure. Nick, on the other hand, is the definition of a Golden Retriever. He is very sweet, and a player on his school’s rugby team.
Charlie is openly gay, and once he is assigned a seat next to Nick he can’t help but catch feelings for him. He isn’t sure if Nick could or would like him back. Charlie’s friends, on the other hand, are worried that Nick is just like the boys who used to bully Charlie for being out. Nick grapples with his feelings for Charlie who may be more than just a friend.
This show deals with topics of mental health, friendship, bullies, coming out, and first love. It’s called Heartstopper for a reason. I recommend this show for all of the hopeless romantics out there and anyone who wants to fall in love with an excellent cast of characters. You can only find this show on Netflix.
Brooklyn 99 (2013)
Brooklyn 99 is a hilarious sitcom which takes place at the 99 police precinct in the middle of Brooklyn. They aren’t just police officers, they are detectives. It’s more realistic than Sherlock Holmes but funnier than real life.
It stars carefree Jacob Peralta who might goof around in the office but is still the best detective. Captain Raymond Holt balances out Jake’s silliness with his one emotion, seriousness. Amy Santiago, the second best cop in the precinct, is a goody two-shoes and the type of person that would have a color-coded binder for everything. Charles Boyle is Jake’s best bud and looks up to Jake even more than Amy looks up to Holt.
Rosa Diaz is scary, intimidating and has never been seen to smile. Sergeant Terry Jeffords is a loyal friend and an even better leader. And finally we have Gina Linetti, who isn’t a very good assistant. She also isn’t a very good communicator or empath. To this day, no one knows why they keep her around.
Jake and his colleagues probably make more jokes than arrests and it’s totally worth it.
Stream now on Peacock or Netflix.
School Spirits (2023)
If you feel like watching a good mystery, here you are. In School Spirits a teenager named Maddie Nears wakes up in the boiler room of her high school. No one seems to be able to see or hear her, she soon discovers it’s because she’s dead. However she doesn’t seem to recall her death unlike all the other ghosts haunting the school. The police didn’t find her body, and everyone thinks she’s missing. With no way out, Maddie is stuck in High School for the rest of eternity not remembering the twenty four hours before her passing on.
How did Maddie wake up in the blood stained boiler room, you ask? Then I suppose you are just going to have to watch the series. With each episode you discover a little more of what happened before Maddie’s ultimate demise. You can watch this show on Netflix or Paramount Plus.
Friends (1994)
Friends is a classic show that came in with a bang in the 1990’s. It was a game changer for all of television. There weren’t many shows like Friends before and people immediately fell in love with the characters. Friends features six 20-to-30 year-olds who, against all odds, are friends. It has ten seasons full of laughs, cries, and even more laughs.
The thing with Friends is that they are all the main characters. No one person is better than the rest. They all participate equally because all of their lives are all important. This is the show to watch when you want to escape reality for a bit. After just a few episodes, you will feel as though you have known those characters your whole life, and as if they were your best friends.
Don’t think that this show is outdated. Despite being thirty years old, the jokes hit the same and it is very entertaining. Watch these six individuals– Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and Ross– live their lives in New York City on Hulu, Max and Apple TV.
The Good Place (2016)
Have you ever wondered what happens when we die? Well, in this series you either get sent to the Good Place or the Bad Place. This show follows four individuals who, after living great lives, have passed on. Because of all of the good things they did while being alive, they all get sent to the Good Place.
Except there’s this one glitch in the system where a certain Eleanor Shellstrop isn’t where she is supposed to be. Eleanor is actually a terrible person. She has lied and manipulated most of her life, and is one of the most selfish people on Earth. Her presence causes havoc in the Good Place, so Eleanor has to try and become a better person.
This is probably the most unexpected series you will ever watch. There are a billion plot twists throughout the four seasons that make the show even better. You never know what is going to happen next. This show is humorous and profound and will leave you on the edge of your seat. You can find this show on Netflix.
