Student government elections for the 2023-24 school year were held last month. The elections are separated by grade, though representatives influence school-wide decision-making. Freshman Eli Eberly was elected 9th grade representative.
Eberly had a wide range of opinions about the state of the school community. Eberly said he ran to “have a say in what happens at the school and give 9th graders a voice through honesty and transparency.”
When asked about his motivations for running, Eberly said, “I just want to try my best to give the other 9th graders a voice. I have been trying to ask people about what kind of things they would like [to see], and today I brought those things up, and we talked about them.” Eberly later added, “I honestly would just like to make people feel like they have a way to convey their thoughts because I personally haven’t always felt like I have.”
According to Eberly, the issues concerning freshmen the most are module weeks, the first of which occurred the week of Oct. 23, and the inability of Museum students to use the newly renovated school yard.
Eberly said, “I think it might have something to do with us never revisiting the topics—I learned a lot during Module Week, but I was scared I might forget the things I learned. I really enjoyed it in the way that it may give someone an idea of what they are interested in. Maybe if there was a way to have an elective where we could revisit what we learned and go even deeper and learn more.”
When asked about the yard issue, Eberly said he was “Personally pretty upset to see that they had done all that renovating and we can’t even use it. From what I’ve heard, all the other students aren’t happy about it either.” Eberly said he plans to “keep trying to change that policy of us Museum schoolers not being able to use it, but I don’t know if we control that, I would have to see.”
Eberly said, “I’ve never done student government before, but I [plan to] try my best [to be the 9th grade representative.]”
