Gourmet Deli & Pizza → 6/10

The bun was a little chewy, and the cheese was really goopy but it wasn’t bad by any means. The bacon was pretty good considering I only like bacon when it’s totally burnt. The eggs were perfect, not wet, and had a good texture. The ketchup added a little sweetness to it but I didn’t really mind. Overall this is a pretty solid sandwich, 6/10.

8th Ave Gourmet → 4/10

They only wrapped it in tin foil so it totally fell apart when I opened it. The bun was perfectly toasted but honestly a little rubbery. The cheese wasn’t too goopy, however they did lack in bacon so that really brought the flavor down and the eggs were just a little too wet for comfort. I’m not trying to slander anyones hard work but like… the dudes at the deli could totally benefit from a bacon egg and cheese making lesson.

Square deli → 4/10

The number one thing I noticed when just looking at it is that the bacon is only on one side of the sandwich. Like the deli guy just wrapped the bacon and cheese into a little omelet but the bacon and cheese were side by side so I couldn’t get a full bite with everything in it. Chomping into it, the bacon was pretty good, but everything was just kinda average with this. Points off for them though because I asked for ketchup with it and they didn’t put any on.

Alaska Deli → 3/10

The bun was so thick and you could barely even tell that there was anything in between the slices. I dont think I’ve ever laughed so hard at anything. This was just a sad looking sandwich. The eggs were kind of wet and so was the cheese. There was barely any bacon, too. This whole thing was just disappointing. The cashier guy is always so nice and I was kind of rooting for them to at least have a decent looking bacon egg and cheese but they just couldn’t deliver. At least I finally bought more gum.

Alaska Deli → 8/10

This has been my go-to staple BEC since I began working at Museum.  While the sandwich seems to have shrunk somewhat over the past couple of months, it’s still a reliable choice.  Just the right ratio of crispy bacon to egg and cheese on a steamy soft roll, done right every time.

8th Avenue Gourmet Deli 6/10

Maybe it was the word “gourmet” in the name, but my expectations were high for this BEC.  I eagerly unwrapped it, took my first bite and…it tasted like a BEC.  By the time I finished the first half, some subtle differences emerged.  This was a heftier sandwich than my go-to at Alaska.  But it was also somewhat blander, as well, with all four components less flavorful than I am used to.  Definitely not worth walking the extra block for me, and definitely not gourmet.

Gourmet Deli and Pizza 5/10

Another “gourmet”?  This sandwich is also burlier  than my Alaska Deli go-to, which is starting to make me feel a little bit cheated in life. The roll was kind of squashed and the bacon soggy, stringy and salty.  That’s not to say I wouldn’t happily eat this BEC if someone offered it to me.  I am beginning to think BEC and pizza share a common trait – even when they are bad, they are good.

Square Deli 2/10

Yuck!  Just when I was beginning to think it was impossible to get a bad BEC in this town, I tried Square Deli’s.  The blandest eggs on the planet, not enough cheese, and super stringy bacon ruined my breakfast.

So, the moral of this story?  It’s hard to go wrong with a basic BEC in Chelsea (just avoid Square Deli’s).  But your favorite sandwich just might end up being the one you purchase regularly at YOUR deli, the one where they know you on sight, make your coffee just the way you like it, and throw in a few extra smiles for free.
